Adventure Express is a mine train roller coaster located at Kings Island amusement park in Mason, Ohio. Designed and built by Arrow Dynamics, the ride opened to the public on April 13, 1991. It is located in the Oktoberfest section of the park near Hank's Burrito Shack and SlingShot. Like many traditional mine trains, the Adventure Express features a lap bar restraint and does not contain any inversions.

History[edit]

Kings Island approached Arrow Dynamics and one of its lead designers, Ron Toomer, in 1990 to build a traditional mine train roller coaster with a unique twist. Unlike previous Arrow installations, this one would be heavily-themed and produce an 'out-of-control feeling' inspired by scenes from the 1984 film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.^[1] Construction began later that year, and the total cost to build the family ride was estimated at $4 million.^[2] The ride was marketed as a jungle adventure mine train that plunges 'through steamy volcanic tunnels, across rickety bridges, and into a deserted mine shaft inhabited by snakes and spiders'.^[2] The roller coaster opened on April 13, 1991.^[3]

Ride description[edit]

As the train leaves the station, it makes a small turn right followed by a small turn left. The train then dips into a slightly-banked turn to the right through a jungle-themed tunnel labeled with a large sign reading 'Track Closed'. After exiting, the train moves over a brake run that slows the train on its way through a second tunnel, where the train makes a sharp, 90-degree turn to the left into the roller coaster's first lift hill. It exits the tunnel at the beginning of the ascent, where a skeleton wearing a safari outfit is seen perched to the right with a spear through the chest and a snake wrapped around its neck. Riders pass under several wooden beams, each featuring a tiki-themed face mounted at the center.

After reaching the top, the train makes a short dip before descending quickly down a winding 270-degree turn to the right. The turn ends with a short dip followed by an ascending 90-degree turn to the left. At the crest of the turn, the train descends again through a slightly-banked turn to the right. After leveling out, riders experience another slightly-banked turn to the left into the coaster's third tunnel. As the train exits, the turn switches to the right and is followed by two ascending left turns that lead into the final tunnel. A second brake run slows the train inside as it enters the second lift hill which is completely enclosed. Large stone warrior statues in several rows with glowing eyes can be seen lining both sides during the ascent. Their arms move in sync rhythmically with clenched fists that are seemingly pounding down towards riders. At the top of the hill is a centrally-mounted stone warrior with sharply-lit eyes appearing to pour a vat of lava – a stationary lit object – on riders as they pass underneath. The train takes a short dip, exits the tunnel in a turn to the right and enters the final brake run before returning to the station.^[4]

Theme[edit]

Adventure Express is themed to a treasure hunting adventure reminiscent of the film Raiders of the Lost Ark from the Indiana Jones franchise. During the years the park was owned by Paramount Parks, the film's theme music could be heard in the line queue with the voice of a station master welcoming 'archaeologists and explorers'.^[5] Throughout the course of the ride, a variety of sounds imitating the setting of a rainforest are projected around riders as they pass through different areas on the ride.^[5] In the final tunnel during the train's ascent, an ominous voice speaks over a haunting musical track stating, 'You have disturbed the forbidden temple. Now you will pay.'^[5]

Some special effects have since been removed. The Indiana Jones theme music with commentary no longer plays in the line queue and the voice along with some lighting effects in the final tunnel are no longer present as of August 20, 2015.^[6]

Dedication[edit]

The construction of the Adventure Express is dedicated to Robert G. Rinckel, who served as construction manager at Kings Island from 1974 to 1990. He died prior to its opening, and a dedication plaque dated April 12, 1991, was placed on a stone near the entrance to the ride.^[7]

1. Build a balanced team!

Starting out, your team at minimum should always have a fighter, an archer, and a mage. The reason being is that each class counters another a class: fighters beat archers, archers beat mages, and mages beat fighters. When your base stats are high enough, this will start to be less important as the game goes on, but early on you should try to stick to this set up for maximum efficiency.

2. Proper positioning is key!

Before every battle, you’re given the chance to move around your heroes. This is very important to being successful, so be sure you position them wisely! For example, you’re going to want your fighter to be in the front lines. Heroes and enemies will attack the closest target to them, and you can see this by moving your heroes around. A blue line will show what your heroes are going to attack, and a red line will show what the enemies are going to attack. If you keep your fighter in the front, all enemies will focus on him, so the less protected archer and mage and stay safe in the back. This also works to your advantage when employed on the enemies! Try to target the less armored enemies first, like the aforementioned archer and mage types.

3. Synergize with your skills and keep them upgraded!

Your skills also play an important part in turning the tides of battle. Many of them give great advantages to your team, such as the fighter’s valuable God of War skill, which temporarily raises his block rate to 100%. This means he’s completely invincible to physical damage, and that is why you want him to be in the front lines at all time, soaking up as much damage as he can. Another example is the ranger’s Powershot skill, which shoots out a piercing shot in a straight line. If your enemies are lined up, this can take a lot of them out with one shot. You can also upgrade these skills with skill books, which you get from questing and then later on the ladder ranked matches.

4. Whenever you get a new equipment scroll, craft it as soon as possible!

Your might is a measurement of generally how strong your entire team is. Equipment and upgraded equipment are the most important factors when determining your team’s strength. You can upgrade a piece of equipment to level 10. If you want better equipment, you need to find the crafting scrolls. You can see which levels reward you with what. To craft a scroll, you need three things: the scroll itself, the unupgraded item, and a material. You can find materials as you progress through the levels, so when you can, make new equipment. You can also check to see what levels a specific material comes from. New weapons and armor give you a huge boost in might, so it’s very crucial to your team’s success.

5. Enhance your equipment as much as you can!

Gold is plenty in this game, and I really mean it. Just throughout the first couple hours I have already amassed 253k gold! With that said, enhancing equipment is no sweat, since all it costs are low gold amounts and some iron ingots. I’ve already mentioned gold, but iron ingots are also kind of easy to get. They’re not as abundant as gold, but you come across iron veins throughout the levels pretty often so you should never be short on them. That, and you also get them from rewards, chests, and the like. Enhancing your equipment is good because when you make the better version of a piece of equipment, you can transfer the upgraded level of the old item to the new one for a small gem fee.

6. Improve your military rank to unlock new heroes!

Before you can buy new heroes in the hero hall, you must improve your military rank. You can do this once you unlock the Battle Court, which allows you attack players. Be sure you check out their team levels and equipment; you don’t want to rush head first into one-sided fight!

7. Enemies too strong? There are a multitude of ways to improve your heroes!

• As mentioned above, new equipment and enhancing equipment does wonders for your heroes’ stats.
• You can also train your heroes after you pass a couple levels. You are given a selection of three instructors, who all improve individual stats. Select the hero and the stat you want to improve, but make sure your success rate is above 100%. 50% is restored every day, so hold off on the training if you’re lower than 100%.
• After clearing some levels in the second world, Death Valley, the Realm of Spirit will unlock in the Stormrage Plains. Here, you can undertake trials to defeat difficult opponents. If you succeed, you’ll be rewarded with badges which allow your heroes to upgrade their class! When a hero’s class is upgraded, all of their stats improve and they can learn new skills!
• Elements are introduced later on. Elements are passive stat bonuses that you can give to your heroes, such as HP, Magic Resist, etc.
