What started as a vintage materials business, Timber & Stone Builders has grown into one of the premier builders in the Texas Hill Country.

“We’ve grown from building authentic rustic timber frame barns and cabins into designing and constructing larger homes, lodges and commercial projects that relate to our style of building,” said Rode Walker, owner and president.

Antique Timber Works, currently managed by Rode’s son, Rowdy Walker, is the sister company that dates back to 2002 as a vintage materials business that included selling salvaged cabins to other builders. From there, Rode began Timber & Stone Builders, a separate construction company in 2003.

Getting started

It’s been 17 years since Rode got into the construction and antique materials businesses, but that’s not where he got his start.

“Basically, I have been an entrepreneur since I got out of college. That’s a fancy way of saying I had to figure things out,” Rode said, adding that he attended Western Texas College, Texas Tech University and finished at Tarleton State.

He rodeoed while in college and then rode bulls professionally, which led him to involvement with many western-oriented associations.

That led to him filling a niche in the apparel industry by designing a line of apparel that was well received by western specialty stores.

“From there, I had a few dips and dives and one thing led me to another and here I am. Looking back, I see all my ventures involved filling a void in a marketplace,” he said.

“Ultimately, I got interested in the history of the reclaimed material business, which led me into building rustic log cabins,” he said. “I think I rediscovered the design side of me and applied it to home building.”

“From there, our style began to range from rustic to contemporary Hill Country,” he said.

The Walker family moved to Fredericksburg 31 years ago where Rode and his wife, Christy, raised their three children, CJ, Rowdy and Bunde.

Timber & Stone

Rode said that Timber & Stone Builders began by offering custom homes and lodges, but is now also offering semi-custom homes.

Tennis elbow 2013 patch 2019 free. Semi-custom, he said, is taking one of their in-house plans and working with a client’s vision and budget to turn their dream into a reality. This simplifies the design process.

“We are basically now selling the Timber & Stone brand,” Rode said.

As part of the design process, Rode said they will visit the client’s property in an effort to design a home that flows with the property.

“We understand what makes the functionality of a house a home,” Rode said. “We take that and add key ‘wow’ factors to complete the vision. We want the end product to be something that looks good but also feels good.”

He also admits it can be very intimidating for clients during the custom home design process. Using the semi-custom approach, it seems to ease that process by using in-house selection choices that seem to work for their style of building.

“We do a lot of listening before we start designing,” Rode said.

“I think we have found our niche in the market,” he said, “and that’s what has allowed us to be successful in custom homes as well as being drawn into commercial projects.”

Antique Timber Works

Antique Timber Works specializes in reclaimed pre-1900 materials and mantles.

They also offer log cabin restoration and custom sawmilling.

As manager, Rowdy is in charge of bringing in the materials, dealing with dismantlers and sales to clients.

Antique Timber Works sells to architects, homeowners, individuals and other builders.

Into the future

The entrepreneur in Rode is looking to the future.

Timber & Stone Builders is expanding the business by offering pre-designed Timber & Stone Builders homes in various developments around Fredericksburg.
